Dallas police probe shooting of mentally ill man

DALLAS (AP) — Surveillance video showing a Dallas police officer shooting a mentally ill man standing still about 20 feet away contradicts the assertion of an officer that the man threatened his safety by lunging at him with a knife.

Bobby Gerald Bennett remains hospitalized after being shot in the stomach Monday. The officer who shot him, Cardan Spencer, is on indefinite administrative leave pending a criminal investigation after a neighbor released surveillance video that captured the incident.

Bennett's mother, Joyce Jackson, said in an interview Friday that her 52-year-old son has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and that he was off his medication at the time of the shooting. Jackson said she was arguing Bennett when she called the police. She was told that officers who have been trained in dealing with the mentally ill would arrive to assist her.

The officers arrived outside her southeast Dallas home around noon to find Bennett sitting on a chair in the street holding a knife. At this point, accounts of the incident differ.

Spencer wrote in a police report that Bennett refused to drop the knife, but moved toward him and another officer "in a threatening manner." Spencer says that's when he fired at Bennett four times from about 20 feet away, wounding him. Bennett was then charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a public servant.

But the video tells a different story. Although the police report says Bennett "lunged" at the officers with a knife, in the video he stands up from the chair but then doesn't appear to move at all until the gun is fired and he crumples to the ground.

The surveillance video doesn't include audio, and Spencer wrote in his report that Bennett yelled at them, "You all are gonna need more officers than this!" But it doesn't show that the incident "escalated, which led an officer to fire his weapon upon the individual," as police spokesman Warren Mitchell said in a statement a few hours after the shooting.

Police Chief David Brown said in a statement Thursday night that Spencer has been placed on indefinite administrative leave pending a "thorough criminal investigation."

Jackson said she and her son had been arguing about whether he could take an ink drawing of a rose he had done for his late grandmother, she said. The drawing is framed on the wall of her home.

The argument soon escalated to the point where Jackson felt she needed police assistance.

"I'm devastated that I felt the need to call 911," Jackson said.

Jackson said her son struggles with mental illness and often leaves her home to sleep on the streets, but said he is an avid artist and reader and isn't violent. According to state criminal records, he was convicted of larceny, vehicle theft and forgery in the 1980s but has no recent arrests.

"I was expecting help from someone that's a lot more knowledgeable than me," she said. Mitchell, the police spokesman, declined to say Friday whether the two officers sent to Jackson's home had any specific mental health training.

Jackson did not see the shooting. She was inside her home when she heard four gunshots. She said it was a "miracle" that her neighbor's camera recorded the incident. Otherwise, "I wouldn't have had a leg to stand on," she said.

Maurice Bunch installed the surveillance camera two years ago after a trailer was stolen from his driveway.

(AP) — Like the character he plays, Clark Gregg has worked his way up the career ladder.

Five years ago, he played Agent Phil Coulson for the first time as a small role in the Robert Downey Jr. romp "Iron Man."

Now, after gaining an ever-higher profile as Coulson in subsequent projects including last year's mega-hit "The Avengers," Gregg has broken out as the star of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," the new acronymic sci-fi thriller (airing on ABC Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EDT), which finds Coulson leading a hand-picked band of agents on their extra-special missions.

Gregg's own mission: to savor his spot as No. 1 on the "Marvel's Agents" call sheet after years of diverse, solid and often acclaimed work that, nonetheless, fell short of making him a household name.

Gregg, 51, has earned his new prominence. As Coulson, he projects a mild demeanor (except when he doesn't) and a boyish smile (except when he takes dead-aim with his weapon or busts a bad guy in the chops). He's a tangy blend of milquetoast and steel.

And he looks good, though not too good, in his habitual company-man business suit.

"Coulson never takes his suit off," said executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen, speaking from Los Angeles, "whether he's on the beach, in the jungle ..."

"But at the risk of spoilers," stepped in fellow exec producer Jed Whedon, "you will see him in a future episode — sans tie!"

Agent Coulson is also a master of the dry quip, courtesy of Gregg.

"No matter what the line, Clark always makes it sound so classy and cool," said Tancharoen.

"The show doesn't take itself too seriously," Gregg notes gratefully during a recent chat in New York, "except in the moments when it needs to. The rest of the time it has a real sense of humor. 'I'm going to Taser you and watch "Supernanny" while you drool into the carpet': That's just not the kind of line I've gotten playing an agent in something else," like, for instance, "The West Wing," where he had a recurring role as, yes, an FBI special agent.

It should come as no surprise that Gregg has a gift for comedy. From 2006 to 2010 he played the mild-mannered but flighty ex-husband of Julia Louis-Dreyfus on her CBS sitcom, "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

Now he gets to lead a team of sexy operatives from the (wait for it) Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division who investigate the extra-normal and superhuman people infesting their futuristic world.

Like "The Avengers," ''Marvel's Agents" boasts a comic-book soul and the creative mojo of Joss (brother of Jed) Whedon. Rounding out its cast are Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennet as Coulson's team.

"Coulson loves his job," says Gregg. "He's jaded, he's seen too much, but he can really geek out. You could imagine him doing selfies with crazy alien corpses! I'm making that up, but he's WAY into what he does."

So is Gregg.

"This show depicts a world that I loved as a kid," says Gregg, whose comic-book faves were Iron Fist, a Kung Fu superhero, and Adam Warlock, an artificial human built by scientists. "This show has given me a great chance to take my 13-year-old self to work with me every day."

Gregg has covered a great distance to get there. He studied drama at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where playwright David Mamet and actor William H. Macy were his teachers.

He later joined them to form New York's respected Atlantic Theater Company. He has written screenplays, including the 2000 Harrison Ford fright drama "What Lies Beneath." He has directed two films from his own screenplays, with his dark comedy "Trust Me" set for release next year.

Along the way, Gregg met actress Jennifer Grey.

"The universe threw us at each other a number of times," he says with a laugh, "but all our attempts at flirting nearly ended up in fistfights. Then, after four years of that, finally something clicked."

They wed in 2001.

When he first took on the role of Coulson, Gregg saw comics-bred cinema as a breed apart from the dramatic work he had done.

"I had worked with Mamet, Macy, ('West Wing' mastermind Aaron) Sorkin! I thought this would be different, that it would be slumming in a pop-culture world."

He now eschews such snobbery.

"When I see the connection that this kind of project has made with people on a global level, I realize that's what I got into acting for," he says. "I don't think there's a higher, more highbrow goal to hope for. After all, Shakespeare wasn't doing work for the queen, he was writing for a bunch of people chewing on disgusting sausages and talking back to the stage."

Gregg laughs and effects an apologetic air. "I don't mean to retroactively trash the sausage vendors of Elizabethan England!" he says. "I just destroyed their Yelp rating."

'Lion King' Is Broadway's First $1 Billion Show

This story first appeared in the Oct. 25 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

The Lion King is about to claim a big crown. The Disney musical that kicked off Broadway's obsession with movies is on pace to become this month the first show to reach $1 billion in cumulative gross. It had collected more than $997 million from its New York shows as of Oct. 6, almost exactly 16 years after its first preview performance on Oct. 15, 1997.

PHOTOS: Broadway Musicals That Have Sung Their Way to the Big Screen

Lion King's success can't solely be attributed to its longevity -- it will soon overtake Les Miserables as just the fifth-longest-running show of all time -- nor to inflated ticket prices. Even with the adoption of premium seating a decade ago, Lion King pricing remains middle-of-the-pack, averaging $130 per seat with a peak price of $199, compared with $171 and $477 for The Book of Mormon.

Instead the family-friendly musical has been rewarded by consistency, playing to packed or standing-room-only houses and dipping below 80 percent capacity fewer than a dozen times in more than 6,600 shows (typical Broadway musical production costs are $600,000 to $700,000 a week). "This humbling milestone is a testament to the vision and artistry of [director] Julie Taymor," says producer and Disney Theatrical Group president Thomas Schumacher. Taymor's Tony-winning direction and the property's worldwide recognition -- the show has grossed $5 billion across 21 global productions -- have made it very good to be King.

No beards! 'Duck Dynasty' stars unrecognizable

TV

Mention "Duck Dynasty," and the first things that come to mind are likely the Robertson family's giant, bushy beards and camouflage gear. Yet in a 2001 photo obtained by Life & Style, the stars of A&E's hit show look more like Abercrombie & Fitch models than the scruffy guys viewers have come to know.

Image: "Duck Dynasty's" Robertson family

Courtesy of Life & Style

Gone is the backwoods look. Instead, from left, Willie, Alan, Ms. Kay, Jase and Jep are sporting clean-shaven faces, healthy tans, nice 'dos and no camo. In fact, they look much more like the multi-millionaires that they are — thanks to their family-run duck-call business — than they do on their hit show. (Dare we say that Willie even resembles "Chicago Fire" star Taylor Kinney?)

Granted, the photo was taken eight years before their first show, Outdoor Channel's "Duck Commander," but the change in appearance over 12 years (and a hit cable program) is pretty astounding. Even cooler, mom Kay, 62, actually looks younger now.

Batman Calls Superman 'F---ing Boring' in Team-up Parody (Video)

We won't be seeing Batman and Superman's big screen team-up until 2015's Man of Steel sequel, but comedian Pete Holmes is already imagining what'll go down.

In his version, Superman comes to Batman (Holmes) to propose a team-up. But the Dark Knight isn't too keen on this, saying Superman only wants to partner up so he'll have a cooler image.

PHOTOS: Batman's Onscreen Villains: 10 Greats From the Joker to Bane

"You're f---ing white bread. You're boring. Look at you in your stupid outfit," Batman says. When Superman says his dad gave him the uniform, Batman chides the hero, telling him to "get over" his dead parents.

"Didn't your parents die?" Superman asks, which causes Batman to burst into tears.

Holmes previously played Batman in a series of CollegeHumor videos, which channeled Christian Bale's version of the Caped Crusader. Earlier in the week, Holmes debuted a sketch showing Professor X (Holmes) firing Wolverine from the X-Men.

The Pete Holmes Show, which partnered with CollegeHumor for the Batman vs. Superman video, premieres Monday, Oct. 28 at Midnight/11 Central on TBS.

Due to rising sea levels, smaller storms could produce significant flooding

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. Almost a year after Hurricane Sandy, parts of New York and New Jersey are still recovering from billions of dollars in flood damage. Tufts University geologist Andrew Kemp sees the possibility of damage from storms smaller than Sandy in the future.

"Rising sea levels exacerbate flooding," says Kemp. "As sea level rises, smaller and weaker storms will cause flood damage." An assistant professor in Tufts' Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Kemp co-authored a study on sea-level change close to New York that was published recently in the Journal of Quaternary Science.

Sandy hit New York as a team led by Kemp was researching sea-level change and flooding that had occurred in seven historically damaging hurricanes in New York since 1788. Last October, Sandy's storm surge hit the coast at high tide, but storm and tidal conditions were not the only cause of the devastation, Kemp says. Seawaters off New York's coast have risen 16 inches since 1778, the year of New York City's first major recorded storm, his research shows.

To make this determination Kemp and his team studied salt-marsh sediments from Barnegat Bay in northern New Jersey, south of the tide gauge at Battery Park in New York. Using sediment cores, long cylinders drilled into the marsh floor that offer scientists a look back through time, they were able to reconstruct sea-level changes since 1788.

Kemp cites two factors for rising seas. One is the natural sinking of land called glacio-isostatic adjustment. A second factor, and one supported by the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), points to the melting of the ice-covered terrain of Greenland and Antarctic as well as the thermal expansion of ocean waters.

Looking forward, Kemp sees the possibility of storms less powerful than Sandy inflicting serious damage. He uses a basketball analogy. "It's like playing basketball and raising the level of the court so that shorter and shorter people can dunk. It makes low lying property and infrastructure more vulnerable at a time when developers are pumping money into coastal cities and towns."

New York court to hear Bloomberg's appeal to restore soda ban

By Daniel Wiessner

ALBANY, New York (Reuters) - New York state's highest court agreed on Thursday to hear Mayor Michael Bloomberg's appeal of a decision striking down a ban on large sugary drinks in New York City, setting up the final showdown over one of the outgoing mayor's most controversial policies.

The Court of Appeals did not say why it had agreed to hear the appeal.

The law would have barred restaurants, movie theaters, food carts and other businesses regulated by the city's health department from selling sodas and other sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces (473 ml). In March, just one day before it was to take effect, a state judge found the policy to be illegal.

A mid-level state appeals court agreed in July that the city's mayoral-appointed health board had exceeded its authority when it approved the new regulation. It also noted that loopholes would have exempted grocery and convenience stores, such as 7-Eleven, known for its 64-ounce (1.9 liter) Big Gulp, as well as high-calorie milkshakes and coffee drinks, such as Starbucks Frappuccinos.

The ruling was a victory for companies including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple, which had argued that the law would do little to address obesity while imposing unnecessary costs. The restaurant industry and several business groups also had filed papers in support of the lawsuit.

Bloomberg said on Thursday he expects the state's top court to overturn the lower-court rulings.

The soda ban "would help save lives, and we are confident the Appeals court will uphold the Board of Health's rule," he said in a statement, noting that excessive soda consumption is linked to obesity and diabetes, which kill at least 5,000 New Yorkers each year.

A spokesman for the American Beverage Association, a trade group and the lead plaintiff in the case, said the group looked forward to a final decision on the ban.

The city had argued that the lower appeals court had ignored decades of case law establishing that the health board has unique powers to regulate public health.

"(The Court of Appeals) has long recognized that the board of health is not a typical administrative agency, but rather, is an entity with legislative authority," city lawyer Fay Ng wrote.

During his three terms, Bloomberg has made public health a signature issue, prohibiting smoking in restaurants, bars and parks; banning trans fats; and requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts.

Stocks open lower on weak corporate earnings

NEW YORK (AP) — Weak earnings from IBM and other major U.S. companies are dragging the stock market lower in early trading.

Interest rates on short-term U.S. government debt declined as investors were relieved that Washington averted a potential default.

IBM, UnitedHealth and Goldman Sachs dragged the Dow Jones industrial average lower after reporting results that disappointed investors.

The Dow was down 100 points, or 0.7 percent, to 15,272 points early Thursday.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 fell but not as much as the Dow. The S&P 500 lost three points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,717 points.

The Nasdaq fell seven points, also 0.2 percent, to 3,832.

The yield on the three-month Treasury bill fell back to 0.1 percent, about where it was in late September, down sharply from 0.13 percent late Wednesday.

Rice joins playoff committee as 'student of game'

The most scrutinized committee in sports has been set. The members say they'll need thick skin, plenty of time and the ability to leave their loyalties behind to pick the four teams that will play for college football's national title next year.

They say they are ready for it.

"I think I've experienced plenty of heat in my life," former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

Rice, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning are among the 13 people who will be part of the College Football Playoff selection committee in 2014. The committee was officially unveiled Wednesday.

The College Football Playoff will replace the Bowl Championship Series. The selection committee will work similarly to the one that picks the teams for the NCAA basketball tournament, though instead of 68 teams it will choose and seed four to play in the semifinals.

The winners of those games, played on a rotating basis at six bowl sites, will meet a week later for the national championship.

"There will undoubtedly be people who disagree with the outcome," Rice said.

Rice was a surprising pick to be part of the postseason system that will replace the Bowl Championship Series next year because she has never worked directly in college athletics, though when she was provost at Stanford the athletic department was under her supervision and she hired Tyrone Willingham as football coach.

She called herself a "student of the game."

"What I can hopefully bring to this committee is critical judgment and the willingness to work real hard ... to put the best four teams on the field," she said.

Rice, who grew up in Alabama, said college football has been trying to come up with a way to crown a champion for years and mentioned how the 1966 championship was muddled when Notre Dame and Michigan State played to a tie. Notre Dame was voted champion by the coaches' and AP polls, but Alabama went 11-0.

"It enhances head-to-head competition," Rice said about the new system.

She said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott approached her about being part of the committee.

"Condi definitely earned her spot on this committee," said Bill Hancock, the executive director of the BCS. "Obviously, part of this is going to be the ability to make judgments under scrutiny, and Condi has that."

Rice is the only woman on the committee.

Some, such as former Auburn coach Pat Dye and former Georgia star and ESPN analyst David Pollack, have said they would prefer only those who have played football to be on the committee.

"I've been in enough positions to respect people who have different views," Rice said. "I will work very hard reviewing film to make good judgments."

She added: "I don't feel I'm carrying the banner for anyone except those of us who love college football."

The panel is made up of five current athletic directors, former players and coaches and college administrators, and a former member of the media.

"Our work will be difficult, but rewarding at the same time," Arkansas athletic director and committee chairman Jeff Long said. "We have important judgments to make during that process. We realize we represent all of college football."

The rest of the members are:

—Barry Alvarez, athletic director, Wisconsin.

—Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, former superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy.

—Pat Haden, athletic director, Southern California.

—Tom Jernstedt, former NCAA executive vice president.

—Oliver Luck, athletic director, West Virginia.

—Dan Radakovich, athletic director, Clemson.

—Steve Wieberg, former college football reporter, USA Today.

—Willingham, former head coach of Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington.

—Mike Tranghese, former commissioner of the Big East Conference.

Hancock said term limits for committee members will eventually be three years, but that will not be the case for all the current members because they do not want to replace the entire committee at once.

"We haven't worked out the stagger yet," Hancock said.

Committee members will recuse themselves when a team they have a direct relationship with comes up in meetings.

"It's imperative for all committee members to check their loyalties and affiliations before entering the meeting room," Jernstedt said.

Hancock said the committee members will be allowed to examine whatever data they believe is relevant.

"No one single metric will be identified as paramount over all other data," Hancock said.

Long said the committee likely will release four or five top 25 rankings during the season, starting around midseason, before the final decisions are made at the end of the regular season.

"I know it's going to have long hours involved," Alvarez said. "Obviously, criticism will be a part of it."

Custom Goods Marketplace Makeably Rebrands As “Hatch,” Now Updates Pricing As You Go

Makeably, the New York-based, custom-made goods marketplace that closed on seed funding from Great Oaks, 500 Startups and others earlier this year is now relaunching under a new, easier-to-remember name: Hatch. Alongside the rebranding, the company has also evolved the process by which consumers tweak and “remix” the products offered for sale.

The site, founded by ex-Googlers Ryan Hayward and Anastasia Leng, is similar to CustomMade in that it’s an attempt to connect everyday shoppers with artisans capable of producing custom goods.

But this summer, Hatch (then Makeably), made a slight shift to differentiate itself somewhat from its competitors. Leng explained that the majority of shoppers looking for custom items weren’t reaching out to artisans with detailed requests sprung out of their own minds, but were rather “remixing” existing products with small change requests. Around 90 percent were asking for minor adjustments – like changing the base material used in a product. For example, they might request a necklace in gold instead of silver. They may have also asked for slight changes to designs or sizes, among other things.

To encourage this culture of remixing, the company changed the site to better support user behavior. In a newly added side panel, customers were told to “Make it Yours” and could fill in a form where they selected the changes they wanted to request.

Today, Leng tells us Hatch is evolving things yet again. “Based on what we’ve learned from our buyers and makers, we’ve moved the customization process directly into the photograph,” she says. Users can now interact with hotspots over a product in order to make better decisions about how to modify it, and they’re presented with visuals about what some of their inputs would look like after doing so.

coasters

At present, users can select options from visual cues the makers themselves provide (like color or type of wood), they can choose from a drop down menu of options for things that don’t require visual cues (like size), or they can describe what they’d like (e.g. a message they’d like engraved), Leng explains. Soon, they’ll be able to drag their own hotspot over a product to better communicate to a maker what they’d like to personalize, too.

To do customization right, Leng thinks Hatch should make it easier for customers to understand what they can change, see what the change looks like, and immediately see the final pricing. “These are the principles that make your experience with a service like Moo, NikeID or event CustomInk a great one. But it’s not obvious how you visualize customization when you’re dealing with products that are made by a large number of individual artisans and makers around the world, as well as products that have never been created in the exact variation you want (but which easily could be),” she says.

In early tests, the company found user feedback about the new process to be positive. “We kept hearing users describe their behavior as not one of buying, but that of designing and creating,” says Leng. (You can try it here with customizing these 3D letters or these wooden coasters.)

letter-hatch

Today, Hatch offers 1,500 live products on its site, on average around two to three per maker, and the average price point has stabilized at $112, which Leng also notes is six times higher than Etsy’s. Eighty-five percent of makers have had at least one inquiry, 40 percent have made one sale or more, and 60 percent are full-time makers not hobbyists.

Meanwhile, on the buyers’ side, 30 percent are repeats, and 98 percent of those make their second purchases from a different category than their first. Since May, Hatch has grown 30 percent month-over-month in new makers and products, and has doubled its user base. The company doesn’t disclose users or revenue, but says that all orders today have come through organic search or referral traffic.

And now that the team is comfortable and has made the sell side of the business work, they’re going to focus on building up the demand side in the months ahead.

However, the question here is whether the maker movement and the market for those in search of custom goods online is large enough today to keep sites like Hatch afloat for as long as it would need to see this thing through. It’s also interesting that they compare themselves to Etsy, a much larger maker marketplace which recently went through growing pains of its own, despite achieving profitability back in 2009. Hatch may have successfully market-tested how custom goods sales can work online, but there’s nothing stopping a larger player from implementing similar technology of their own (or even acquiring Hatch if the startup runs out of runway, perhaps).

In other news, Hatch was previously working out of a maker co-working space in Brooklyn called 3rd Ward, which shut down earlier this month, after giving Hatch less than a week to find a new home. They’ve now put an offer down on a space in Chelsea, which would bring them into Manhattan.

Actor Christopher McDonald in a mug shot on Wednesday.

Actor Christopher McDonald, who starred as Shooter McGavin in the 1996 Adam Sandler movie "Happy Gilmore," was arrested for DWI in Wilmington, N.C., early Wednesday.

According to a report in Wilmington's Star News, McDonald, 58, was arrested by the North Carolina Highway Patrol at 1:45 a.m. on the city's Third Street. The newspaper reports that State Highway Patrol Sgt. C.K. Parks said a breath-test determined the actor's blood-alcohol was 0.15.

The Star News also reports that McDonald was released at 7:20 a.m. on a $1,000 unsecured bond and has a court date set for Dec. 11.

Wilmywood Daily, which reports on Wilmington's film scene, says McDonald arrived in town this week to film "The Squeeze," another golf-themed movie. The site says McDonald was recognized by people at the airport and was "super nice to everyone while taking pictures with a few fans at baggage claim."

TMZ also posted a picture of McDonald with fans, allegedly taken hours before his arrest, at a bar in Wrightsville, Beach, N.C.

In the comedy "Happy Gilmore," McDonald's evil tour pro Shooter McGavin is the arch-nemesis of Sandler's title character, a newcomer with the ability to hit a golf ball a great distance.

McDonald is also known for his role as Darryl, the creepy husband in "Thelma & Louise," and Tappy Tibbons in "Requiem for a Dream." IMDb credits the actor with 85 film roles and numerous television appearances.

As Greenland Seeks Economic Development, Is Uranium The Way?

Men stand inside the gold mine in Greenland's Nulanaq mountain on Dec. 19, 2009. The Danish territory's underground wealth was at the forefront of elections in March. Now, Greenland faces another dilemma: whether to end a zero-tolerance policy on uranium extraction.

Adrian Joachim/AP

Karen Hanghoj, a scientist with Denmark's Geological Survey, points to the southern tip of Greenland on a colorful map hanging in her office.

"What you can see here in the southern region here, is you have a big pink region," she says. "And then within the pink region, you see you have all these little purple dots.

"And what the purple dots are is a later period of rifting. These complexes have these weird chemistries and have these very, very strange minerals in them," she adds.

Those minerals include rare earth elements. They are essential to making cell phones, wind turbines, hybrid cars and many other products. China enjoys a near-monopoly on the global supply, sparking a race to find new sources of the 17 metals. One particularly large known deposit is in Greenland. But there's a catch.

Hanghoj lifts a hefty rock off her desk. It comes from that pink and purple polka-dotted region, though the rock itself is nondescript — except for one shiny black nugget known as steenstrupine.

"That mineral has all of the rare earths, or most of the rare earths, but also most of the uranium," Hanghoj says.

Uranium would therefore have to mined along with those coveted rare earth minerals.

Legislative Roadblocks

There are a few problems with that.

First, Greenland has a ban on uranium extraction. The zero-tolerance policy was put in place 25 years ago when Greenland was more tightly controlled by nuclear-averse Denmark. Since then, Greenland has taken on a new level of self-governance, including jurisdiction over its own natural resources.

This month, Greenland's parliament appears likely to lift the zero-tolerance policy. That could open the door for uranium mining not only as a byproduct, but also as a primary product. By some estimates, Greenland has enough of the radioactive stuff to make it one of the top five exporters in the world.

It's one thing if we're abolishing a policy, but what is going to be the policy instead of that? And that is something where Denmark and Greenland for the first time in their history really need to start engaging in a discussion that they have not had up to this point.

That raises questions for Denmark, which is still responsible for Greenland's foreign policy and security.

"The Greenlandic position seems to be that as long as we are exporting for peaceful purposes, then Denmark does not need to be engaged," says Cindy Vestergaard, a senior researcher with the Danish Institute for International Studies. But, she adds, "how will Denmark know it is being used for peaceful purposes if they are not involved?

"So it's one thing if we're abolishing a policy, but what is going to be the policy instead of that?" she asks. "And that is something where Denmark and Greenland for the first time in their history really need to start engaging in a discussion that they have not had up to this point."

Environment Or ...

There are also environmental concerns – parallels for which can be seen across the world in projects like the Keystone XL pipeline in the U.S. and Brazil's massive dams in the Amazon.

This spring a coalition of 48 nongovernmental organizations from around the world called on Greenland to uphold the zero-tolerance policy, citing the potential for radioactive pollution in a delicate Arctic ecosystem. And members of Greenland's opposition party, like Sara Olsvig, say the public still doesn't really understand the potential consequences of uranium mining.

"We have a lot of other choices in Greenland of other minerals, other resources, living and nonliving, that we can export," she says. "And our opinion is that we should go for those other resources instead of rushing through a decision on uranium, not even knowing if in the long run will pay off.

"We don't even know the full picture of what things we would have to build to just monitor a big open pit uranium mine in Greenland."

... Economic Development?

But for others, mining and the economic opportunities it represents cannot come fast enough. Technically, Greenland could declare independence from Denmark at any time. But without new sources of income, it remains tethered to its annual Danish subsidy of roughly half a billion dollars.

"When you can take care of yourself, you have more respect and pride in yourself," says Doris Jakobsen of the ruling Greenlandic party. "The same is true of the Greenlandic people."

Jakobsen says that protecting Greenland's environment is her priority, and adds that lifting the zero-tolerance policy does not mean uranium mining will necessarily happen. But she's tired of hearing what others say Greenland can and can't do.

"I can't accept that Greenland should become a museum," she says. "Those [non-governmental organizations] also say that it should be forbidden to sell our seals, forbidden to whale, forbidden to extract oil, forbidden to extract uranium. You can't limit everything. Greenland needs economic development."

Whatever happens in regard to uranium, this issue has raised the decibel level of discussion about Greenland's future. And if there's one thing both the ruling and opposition parties can agree on, it's that any movement is good if it leads to independence.

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler back as Golden Globes hosts

NEW YORK (AP) — The duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler proved such a success at hosting the Golden Globes in January that they've been signed up for the same job for the next two years.

NBC, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and producers of the Golden Globes announced the unusual two-year commitment on Tuesday. Next year's Golden Globes will be held in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Jan. 12.

Allen Shapiro, CEO of Dick Clark Productions, said the former "Saturday Night Live" chums have "a truly unique chemistry making them one of the most talented and captivating pairings of all time."

They were bathed in critical love for their performance this year, with Associated Press critic Frazier Moore calling them "the night's biggest winners." They got laughs without being polarizing, as was the case with predecessor Ricky Gervais. Poehler even poked fun during the show at the Hollywood debate over whether Gervais was too hard-edged in mocking Hollywood stars.

"We want to assure you that we have no intention of being edgy or offensive tonight," said Poehler, star of the NBC sitcom "Parks and Recreation." "Because, as Ricky learned the hard way, when you run afoul of the Hollywood Foreign Press, they make you host this show two more times!"

Fey, whose NBC comedy "30 Rock" ended this year, and Poehler were both nominated for best actress in a comedy or musical but lost to Lena Dunham, star of HBO's "Girls."

"Last year was really fun," Poehler said in an interview with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. "We didn't know what to expect. It was exciting to work with Tina, as always, and it was a strange experience. We had a lot of fun so we said maybe we can try it again and like fools we are giving it another shot."

More important than critical support, Fey and Poehler were good for business. The Golden Globes had their best ratings in six years for the most recent presentation, and were up 17 percent over the 2012 show.

Dutch police arrest 'cocaine smuggling' Schiphol workers

The Hague (AFP) - Dutch police have arrested several airport workers at Amsterdam's Schiphol who allegedly picked up cocaine packages stashed aboard planes arriving from Latin America, a gendarme spokesman said on Tuesday.

A total of 15 people have been arrested since July, seven of them employed by the same company at Schiphol, spokesman Robert van Kapel told AFP, declining to name the company.

"Further arrests are not excluded," he added.

The men, aged 23 to 65, are Dutch, Turkish and Colombian citizens, he said.

They were arrested in raids on homes in and around Amsterdam.

Van Kapel said "tens-of-kilos" of cocaine had been hidden on flights from Central and South America, but he declined to say where on the planes the drugs were stashed.

"The flights were never put in danger as a result," he added, saying the investigation was ongoing.

The 15 men are to face charges of drug smuggling and some also face illegal weapons charges, Van Kapel said.

Last year Dutch authorities arrested 12 airport workers suspected of helping to smuggle cocaine from the Caribbean.

In March last year, gendarmes at Schiphol confiscated 300 kilos of cocaine from South and Central America with an estimated street value of 12 million euros ($16 million).

The haul was one of the largest in recent years at the airport.

Schiphol is Europe's fourth-busiest airport with between 120,000 to 140,000 passengers passing through daily.

Bunkr Unveils New Major Version Of Its PowerPoint Killer

illu-pc02French startup Bunkr just released a new major version of its presentation web app in partnership with Etamin Studio. It still is a fully responsive HTML5 web app that works seamlessly on your computer, phone or tablet. Yet, it was redesigned from the ground up and the new user experience should make the app more appealing to new users. As a reminder, Bunkr is the PowerPoint killer we’ve all been waiting for. It allows you to collect content and create a presentation, integrating the cumbersome image searching and saving step into the service. Whenever you see something that you want to add to your presentation, just click on the bookmarklet and it will be in your Bunkr account. Users can collect images, videos, websites, articles, notes or quotes. On the presentation side, it looks a lot like PowerPoint for the web. Like in PowerPoint and unlike in Prezi, Bunkr still uses the traditional slide metaphor with simple drag and drop mechanisms. In other words, Bunkr paid attention to heavy PowerPoint users — they won’t feel lost. Finally, sharing a Bunkr presentation is as easy as sharing a URL. It makes it much easier to see a presentation on a smartphone or tablet or even to send a presentation to someone. And if you really need this .ppt or .pdf file, you can download it. For now, you have to search on Google Images, YouTube and your hard drive to import content. Adding support for more services should come next. Even though Bunkr wants to replace your Evernote presentation folder, linking directly to Evernote has its own advantages. Out of its 35,000 user base, 500 clients are already paying for the product. The ratio is definitely low, but the startup already has some high-ranked clients, such as Amazon, Publicis and Orangina Schweppes. This new version is really what it should have been from the get-go. It looks better and it works better. Now, gaining traction and raising the right amount of money are the two next steps to turn Bunkr into a serious Prezi and Google Docs competitor.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/L6Sjg_Avz6M/

Libyan al-Qaeda suspect to appear in court in New York

By David Ingram and Mark Hosenball

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An alleged senior al Qaeda figure captured in Libya by U.S. special forces earlier this month has been brought to the United States to face arraignment on federal terrorism charges, U.S. officials said on Monday.

The Libyan, Nazih al-Ragye, better known as Abu Anas al-Liby, is a suspect in the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed 224 civilians.

He was seized by a U.S. Army Delta Force squad on the streets of Tripoli on October 5 and whisked onto a Navy ship in the Mediterranean Sea.

He was flown to the United States and handed over to civilian law enforcement over the weekend and brought directly to the New York area, said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the chief federal prosecutor for Manhattan.

Al-Liby is expected to appear before a judge on Tuesday, Bharara said in a statement. A criminal indictment was filed in 2001 against al-Liby and others suspected in the embassy bombings.

U.S. officials initially said they expected al-Liby would be held aboard ship for weeks or months while under questioning by an elite U.S. interagency team known as the High-Value Target Interrogation Group, or HIG.

But a law enforcement official said that, soon after his capture, it became clear to interrogators that al-Liby suffered from several pre-existing, chronic health conditions.

The official said his transfer to the custody of civilian authorities in the United States was necessary because medical facilities aboard ship were not sophisticated enough to provide adequate care.

Al-Liby's wife has said in media interviews that he suffers from Hepatitis C.

David Patton, the chief public defender for New York who had requested that a judge appoint a defense lawyer for al-Liby, had no immediate comment on al-Liby's transfer.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan declined on Friday to assign a court-appointed attorney to al-Liby until he had been formally arrested by law enforcement.

It was not immediately known whether al-Liby cooperated with U.S. interrogators or provided them with intelligence of any value. He was in military custody for about 10 days.

SENATOR LEAHY APPLAUDS MOVE

Shortly after al-Liby was captured, Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham suggested he should be held as an enemy combatant and interrogated at the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which President Barack Obama has vowed to close.

In the past, local authorities in New York and national politicians expressed concern that the imprisonment and trial of high-level al Qaeda suspects in New York or other U.S. cities could provoke retaliatory attacks against the U.S. mainland.

Over the past year, however, other high-level al Qaeda suspects, including a close associate of the late Osama bin Laden and a notorious London-based preacher known as Abu Hamza al Masri, have been extradited to New York to face federal court trials with little apparent impact on security.

Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, applauded the decision to try al-Liby in a civilian court. It "shows that the United States acts out of strength and not out of fear. We are not afraid of terrorists, nor are we afraid to bring them to justice in our courts," he said.

U.S. officials say al-Liby remained a significant figure in al Qaeda. They said he served as a liaison between militant groups in Libya and North Africa and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian physician who now leads what remains of al Qaeda's core organization based in Pakistan.

In the wake of the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington D.C., the U.S. government offered a $25 million reward for information leading to al Liby's capture. But later the reward was reduced to $5 million.

A group of Libyan gunmen who briefly seized Prime Minister Ali Zeidan from a Tripoli hotel last Thursday said they did so because of his government's role in the U.S. capture of al-Liby.
